Biobanking and the Management of Genetic Material in the IRCCS Network
Italy has established a sophisticated network of Biobanks to store genetic material and associated clinical data.
These biobanks are primarily housed within the IRCCS network and are governed by strict ethical guidelines. The goal is to create a "living library" of the Italian genome that can be used for longitudinal research into aging, cancer, and rare diseases.
Participants in these biobanks must provide "dynamic consent," allowing them to change their preferences over time regarding how their samples are used. The 2026 standards for Italian biobanking require high-level "biovigilance," ensuring that samples are tracked from collection to analysis with full transparency. This infrastructure is a key component of Italy's participation in international projects like the 1+ Million Genomes (1+MG) Initiative, which aims to provide cross-border access to genomic data across Europe for the advancement of public health.
